- WHAT'S NEW IN RMS-III: THE HISTORY OF VERSION CHANGES
-
- Changes between version 3.2b and 3.2d.
-
- 1. Small changes. Rapid scan data display was improved. Handling of
- more than nine authors was improved in both RMS-III & TSX. An option
- was added to regulate output of multiple authors. A page pause
- option was added for report printing. In 3.2d, handling of some UDS
- lines was corrected. (This may affect behavior of some older UDS's!!)
- For report output, effect of margin settings can now be shown on
- screen even if printer is off. An installation problem was fixed.
-
- Changes between version 3.1e and 3.2b.
-
- 1. Robustness & stability of the program has been improved. This was
- especially important with respect to use of the ESC key to exit or
- cancel operations. Also, attempts to print to the printer are now
- controlled if the printer is not functioning.
-
- 2. The F1 function key is now used more consistently to provide HELP
- and INFORMATION. As part of this, the menu position of information
- and file opening has been reversed in several menus. Users of prior
- versions may find this requires some change in use pattern.
-
- 3. There is now much more help available, especially in the data entry
- and search operations. Included are suggestions for entry of several
- data types relative to particular data handling elsewhere in the
- program. Entry codes for special characters are included.
-
- 4. The set-up menu (#8 of main menu) has been completely changed and
- the set-up operations expanded. The set-up menu screen colors have
- been set mostly to back & white to minimize conflicts. There are
- now five pre-defined screen color choices, as well as a user
- defined choice, and real screen test examples.
-
- 5. Set-up now includes two user preference settings: one for full
- screen record-data display (positions keyblock guide), the other
- for multi-item search defaults. These are explained in the menu.
-
- 6. Record scanning in the Management Menu has been changed. It now
- includes a second display format which presents information from
- 22 records per screen in a browse type format; display of a full
- record can be accessed in this mode.
-
- 7. Search over a specified range of years is now possible in the Multi-
- Item search operation. The handling of exact vs. partial searches in
- Multi-Item search has been changed. The default search mode in all
- fields is now consistently 'partial', i.e., SMITH will find SMITHSON.
- But, an exact search option is now available for AUTHORS (new) as well
- as KEYWORDS (old); this mode requires starting the entry with a !.
- Previously the "!" was used to change keywords from exact to partial,
- and the situation is now reversed. (Prior users please note.)
-
- 8. In the Mixed-Logic search operation, search in all major text fields
- can now be done with a single field specification {0}.
- Also, CODE_2 was added to the search fields.
-
- 9. A SEARCH and replace operation was added to the utility menu.
-
- 10. ERASE utility now covers all files related to a specified database.
-
- 11. CONDENSE utility now correctly removes records marked for deletion
- and packs the database (in addition to consolidating the memo file.)
-
- 12. Duplicate record checking was expanded to permit display and
- treatment of individual duplicate pairs in addition to group checks.
-
- 13. A function, ADJVOL(), was added to allow manipulation of volume and
- issue data; can be used in User Defined Styles for output format.
-
- 14. Small changes were made in formating control; many changes were made
- in the TSX translation operations, including display of tag files.
-
- 15. External macros are included for WordPerfect users to convert
- printer control codes to WordPerfect format. (see RMS2WP.DOC)
- Now covers versions 5.x/6.0 for DOS and windows.
-
-
- Changes between version 3.1c and 3.1e.
-
- 1. In versions 3.1a - 3.1c the multi-item search on the SOURCE
- field did not function correctly; this was corrected in 3.1e.
-
- 2. The duplicate checking operations were extended to allow checks
- throughout the entire database.
-
- 3. The output options in multi-item search were expanded to include
- display of abstracts.
-
-
- Changes between version 3.1a and 3.1c.
-
- 1. In the TSX mudule, handling of authors first and last names was
- improved in tagged data import. Import/export for Pro-Cite(R)
- and RefList files was improved.
-
- 2. The function SIC() was improved to maintain chemical formulas as
- written when converting strings to sentence type structure.
-
- 3. Re-formatting of authors names in the case of corporate authors
- was blocked (by inclusion of "=" character in name).
-
- 4. The user defined styles APA-01-P.UDS and APA-01-F.UDS were
- changed to use the function SIC() to force sentence type
- capitalization of the record title.
-
- Changes between version 3.0a and 3.1a.
-
- 1. Extended handling of records in data files from 9,999 to 99,999.
-
- 2. Added ability to replicate an entire record during data input.
- This is in addition to replication of selected fields.
-
- 3. Added facility for use of a question mark, ?, as a character
- wild-card in multi-item searches.
-
- 4. The multi-item search, screen 4.5, now allows keyword search
- entries to be longer than the 23 character field provided.
-
- 5. Introduced additional user defined styles, UDS's, to provide
- output for several commonly used bibliographic formats.
-
- 6. Provided for direct entry from RMS-III utilities into the TSX
- extended translation program (hard disk operation only).
-
-
- Changes between version RSX V-2.4j and V-3.0a.
-
- This was a major system revision. The name acronym was changed from
- RSX to RMS. An additional item was added to each primary menu screen.
- The Utility Menu was significantly revised; among other things, more
- printer control and port selection was added. The Search Menu was
- changed to list the mixed-logic as a separate menu item. The Report
- Output Menu added generation of topical indexed lists, and an option
- for user defined styles (UDS's) of bibliographic reports. Additional
- notes are listed by function.
-
-
- DATA ENTRY MANAGEMENT:
-
- 1. Help/Lists (F1) added display of data previously entered such as
- keywords, authors, reference types, and source. Assists in making
- consistent entries and in searching.
-
- 2. Record duplication check was provided between (& within) databases.
- Used to reduce redundancy of data in different files.
-
- 3. In the view-only mode of the data management operation, a shift to
- edit mode was provided to make changes in the displayed record.
-
- 4. Treatment of extra long authors, source and title fields was
- accomodated by spill-over into the comment field. Split data is
- linked at time of output.
-
-

-
- 5. The multi-item search operation was extended to words/phrases in
- the abstract/memo field. `Hits' are identified with an {abs} mark.
-
- 6. Conditional control of multi-item search output was added for extra
- limitation of search output.

- output styles. These can be developed/edited by the user.
-
- 8. Authors name manipulation. More extensive control was added of
- firstname/lastname placement, and use of initials.
-
- 9. Abstract handling and output was greatly improved.
-
- 10. Conditional control of record report output was added to impose
- user specified condition on output at time of report generation.
-

- These lists were made accessible in record management and search
- operations. Also, new lists can index items to record location.
- List and index output was expanded to `print' to disk files.
-
-
- UTILITIES:
-
- 18. Printer control was greatly expanded. Internally defined printers
- now include bold, underline, and italic attributes that can be used
- in UDS's. Two user defined printers can be addressed. Printer ports
- can be assigned. A temporary printer selection can be used without
- changing the default definition.
-
- 19. A facility was included to replace the contents of a specified
- field, globally or based on a conditional statement.
-
